The VAIB lobbies wthin Virginia and Washington, D.C. on matters relating to moral issues; abortion, marriage, gambling, etc; other matters of concern to Independent Baptist Churches and their ministries.
Eddy Aliff was saved in 1971 near the beginning of his junior year of high school while attending Fellowship Baptist Church. Not long after that Eddy's girlfriend (now his wife) Carol, was also saved. During his college years he remained faithful attending church and serving in vaious youth ministries. After completing college and marrying his high school sweatheard, Carol, he began teaching in the Christian school at Fellowship. They served there from 1976 until 1980 when God directed them to a ministry in Arkansas. They remained in Arkansas until 1983 when they were called to serve at Landmark Baptist Church in Richmond where they served from 1983 until 2009 under Dr. Jim Sumpter and then Pastor Don Sumpter. While at Landmark God blessed them with three children: Erik is married; after graduating from Christian college, he and his woife began teaching in a Christian school in Wisconsin. Sarah is a graduate of a Christian college; she was married in June 2010 and now works in the same Christian school as Erik. Much of our attention recently has been drawn to the weather with storms, flooding, and tornadoes. The damage and deaths remind us of ourneed to depend on and trust in God. I have not heard of any of our churches being damaged or their members being directly impacted, but I have personally seen how close one tornado came to a church in Waverly. Still, there is the need for us to help as we are able to show the love of Christ.
This week the health care saga continued as Solicitor General E. Duncan Getchell Jr. represented Virginia before the three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. A decision is expected by May 20. Whichever side loses is sure to appeal to the US Supreme Court.
This fall will see more new faces running for office as more incumbents announce they will not be running for re-election. If the latest redistricting is approved, some delegates will have changes to their districts. State senators will also be standing for election this fall. Before voting for a delegate or senator, determine if he or she:
Is against abortion
Is against using your tax money to support Planned Parenthood
Is against same-sex marriage and only for “one man and one woman” marriage
Is against protecting homosexuals as a “special class of individuals”
Is against raising taxes
Is against gambling or expanding gambling (lottery, horse racing, etc)
Is against homosexual couples adopting as couples
Is against hate crimes laws
Liberal media, like television and newspapers, will use polls and other data to try to convince you that society has changed its opinion on some of these matters. But God has not and will not change His mind. When voters’ guides and report cards become available, I will forward them to each church.
In Giles County, Virginia, the Ten Commandments have hung on school walls for years next to copies of the U.S. Constitution. But one anonymous complaint in December resulted in an order to remove them. Day by day I am saddened by statements and decisions made by our President. Please pray diligently and often for our President. Pray that God might be honored and His ways followed by our country. Proverbs 14:34 reminds us, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”

I pray you had a blessed Christmas and New Year’s holidays. We had a wonderful time with family in Wisconsin. Like us, all are back to their usual responsibilities; like you, the work continues.
The “Red Books” which provide the contact information for the legislators will be available on our web site by the end of this week. There will be some new faces such as:
Del. Roxann Robinson (R) 27th district (part of Chesterfield Co.)
Del. Tony Wilt (R) 26th district ( Rockingham Co.; Harrisonburg)
Del. Gregory Habeeb (R) 8th district (Salem; part of Roanoke Co.)
Delegate to be elected from the 91st district (Poquoson; part of York Co. and Hampton) to replace Tom Gear who resigned due to health reasons. This election will be held on March 8.
Sen. William Stanley, Jr (R) 19th district (Danville; part of Franklin & Pittsylvania Cos.)
We have already been in the offices of Delegates Robinson and Wilt, as well as reconnecting with most of the other legislators from last year.
We are reviewing legislation and preparing strategies to defeat or defend bills which impact you and your church. Dr. Knapp and I have spent hours reviewing over 500 bills. We have also discussed strategies and how I should approach “speaking to” these bills in committees. Some of our concerns are:
Senate bills 747 and 797 and House Bill 1509 to provide special protection and nondiscrimination for “sexual orientation” (oppose)
House Bill 1409 to protect prayer at public events (support)
House Bill 1428 to license abortion clinics (support)
Thank you for your prayers for us and for the legislators. Pray for:
God’s leading
Open doors and hearts of the legislators as we talk with them
Wisdom and power as we speak in Committee meetings
