Arrived!
We arrived back safely on May 27. Thank you for you prayers. We arrived at the Central Japan International Airport without incident. The almost 20-hour trip went as smoothly as a 20-hour trip can go. Frank and Judy Musk, as well as my parents, were there to greet us when we arrived. Our coworker, Bekah Kuehlman, happened to be returning from a wedding and came in just before we did. It is not that we are unthankful for all the gracious hospitality we experienced during our furlough, but after a year of traveling, it was so nice to be back in our own beds.Furlough? In about ten months of traveling, we covered about 40,000 miles by car and close to another 6000 miles by air. We traveled as far south as Tampa, Florida, as far west as Las Vegas, Nevada, as far north as Watertown, Wisconsin, and as far east as Georgetown, Delaware, and many places in between. Mike McGowan Mike just joined our ministry here in Nagoya. Among other things, he will be working with us in our ministry to college students in our area. There are four major universities within a few miles of the church, and we have been seeking to develop a ministry to reach them for a few years now. We have been out the past three days apartment hunting for Mike. Please pray that the Lord will lead him to the right place. Tsunami Victims - Please continue to pray for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in north central Japan. We are planning a trip to see how we can help in the rebuilding effort of the ministries in the affected areas. Dan Roberts continues to be our point man, making regular trips into areas still with great physical need and even greater spiritual need. Dan shared with us that the need is greater in some respects, as they are being moved from the schools, community centers, and shelters into private temporary housing that the government has built for them. When they were together, they encouraged each other, but now that they are being separated, the struggle seems to be more difficult. Please pray the people would be willing to reach out for the spiritual help they so desperately need. Bekah Kuehlman Bekah has successfully finished her first year of language training and will be working to develop our children’s ministry, as well as working with the ladies. The Lord has given her a nice apartment and car, and we are looking forward to how He will use her. Pray for her continued language studies and physical strength. Frank & Judy Musk We thank the Lord again for the ministry of Frank and Judy Musk in our absence. They not only held things together, but had a great ministry at CBC and NIBC. Church BBQ We had our beginning-of-summer church BBQ. After a combined Japanese/English church service, we all went out in the church yard and cooked a Japanese BBQ on real wood coals. Many agreed that the flavor was better than when we cooked on the gas grill, though it was much slower. I didn't tell them that the decision was made because I forgot to get the propane tank filled. What they didn't know didn't hurt them. Father’s Day This year there was a new father to honor on Father’s Day. Loh and Min, who have been working in our English church in our absence, are expectng their first child in October. If the child in the womb is a child, then the father is a father. So, Loh received one of the beautiful pieces of individually wrapped, store-bought cakes the church gave to all the fathers this year. When Min saw it she said, “I’ll take that,” but there were extras so he got to eat his own piece. Prayer Requests
